I am marketing a product line for a business and I need to find data on who are my consumers and will they buy my product line?

To start researching consumer data it is best to look at demographic information and social trends of your potential target market.

To locate demographic data including key data (age, sex, income etc) start with:

American Factfinder ( Census data:search by zip code, city, county, or state)

Pew Social and Demographic Trends (Survey data collected on American's lifestyles)


I am researching a start up business in the Spokane area and I need to find types of businesses in a particular neighborhood in Spokane:

To locate types of businesses and statistics go to:

The County and Zip Code Business Patterns (Census data and search by zip code for neighborhood information)


    Company Research

    How do I find company background info?

    To locate company background info including history, overview, and company description go to:

    How do I find private company information?

     Private company information can be tricky because private companies don't have to disclose their financial information. The best places to go are:

    Lexis Nexis Academic Company Profiles

    Reference USA (for smaller private companies)

    Plunkett Research Private Companies

    How do I locate company financial statements including 10K's and Annual reports?

    If a company is public then locating the annual reports can be done via two ways:

    Standard and Poor's Netadvantage Database

    SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission has company 10K's and other reports)


      Industry Research

      I am looking to create a business plan for a start up company how do I find information about the industry and competition?

      In order to gain an understanding of the industry for a company you are planning to start you need to research the industry performance, products/markets, and competition go to the following resources:

      Plunkett Research (includes industry statistics, market research and trends, and build a report feature)

      I recommend two sources that will give you industry data for China and any other country:

      OECD Statistics Portal (search by topics at the top of the page and countries)
